It was my first year of teaching…

Here I was, right out of college, and I was just offered my dream job at a local charter school as a fourth grade math and science teacher.

Nervous, but ready for the challenge, I prepared to take over a class that a veteran, special education teacher of 20+ years could not manage. I’ve always liked a challenge.

  • 48 unique nine year olds

  • 48 sets of parents

  • >5 IEPs (Individualized Education Plans)

  • Three 504 Plans

This is where I met my most memorable student….Ezra.

In came my most memorable student…

Spinning on the rolling chair in the back of the room, beat boxing, drumming, and constantly moving. It took longer than I would like to admit before I realized that this boy was not like the other students in my class.

Funny, clever, argumentative, and smart. Just SO unique. I found myself enthralled in conversations with him. He made the most amazing observations and asked the most intriguing questions. He was not just unwilling to fit into the mold of the traditional classroom, he literally was unable to.

Fast forward eight months... gifted. Ezra was, and is, unbelievably gifted. He had been falling through the educational cracks for years - labeled a troublemaker, a problem child.

Everything started to click from my own childhood. Bored, class clown, and worst of all, my love of learning completely disappearing by fifth grade.

I left the charter school that year and accepted a job at a private school exclusively for gifted students.
